Vibrators – a brief history

The technique known today as masturbation was used to treat illnesses like ‘female hysteria’ many centuries ago. However, in days gone by, erotic stimulation of the vulva was largely considered to be a time consuming exercise and no correlation was drawn between such stimulation and sex. The first electrically powered vibrators made its appearance in the 1880s, while an electric vibrator was first made available for retail sale in 1902. It might come as surprise to many people that the vibrator was the fifth domestic appliance that was powered by electricity.

Over time the use of vibrators has soared due to heavy coverage and promotion in women’s magazines. Since the 1980s, vibrators have achieved the height of visibility. Today, vibrators have been accepted as a part of mainstream culture, making them an extremely popular buy amongst women.
